Lalzuimawii, a petite public health engineer from Mizoram, India was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Eltham for a one month visit to Melbourne in November 2005.
'Zuii' stayed with Marion and Kevin Hadingham and had a four week program of presentations and site inspections of Melbourne's water treatment plants, sewerage plants, landfill sites and recycling facilities (- oh yes, and some tourist sightseeing too!)
At the end of April 2006 the roles were reversed when Zuii took me to the site of the new water pumping and treatment plant for Aizawl. Aizawl, capital of Mizoram, obtains it's water from a river some 800 metres below the city.
The existing pumps have a capacity of 10.8 megalitres per day. A new scheme is being installed in parallel, adding 12megalitres per day capacity - a very significant project. This will not provide continuous water supply to all homes of Aizawl, but will improve the breadth of the water system and may enable water supply to some localities twice a week instead of once a week.
Zuii is supervising the construction and commissioning of the water treatment facility which is part of the new scheme - a very responsible position. There is no doubt that her awareness of practices from her Melbourne study tour, as well as her strong professional commitment would have played a part in her selection for this role. It was very pleasing to see her in this work context.
