20 February 2020
What a night. It started with Fine Master Ken Paynter hitting our pockets left, right and centre. Then sweet talker Ken hands out roses to the ladies. Only there is a catch. He then fines all the guys present on the tables where the roses were distributed (all tables), after which he proceeds to fine the rose recipients. Masterful, Ken.
The Talent show started with the club singing (badly) the Peter Allen classic ‘I Still Call Australia Home’. Next up was Gary Williams, talking on the Mining Boom of the 60’s - the ups and the downs, the booms and the busts. The gold rush had been replaced by iron ore, aluminium, bauxite, tin and copper. Heady days indeed.
Keith den Hartog then gave us a history lesson of the 1616 Dutch explorer and Captain Dirk Hartog (possibly related?) aboard the ship Eendracht. The first European to land on the shores of Western Australia.
Michael Martin then gave a sterling rendition of A.B 'Banjo' Paterson’s The Geebung Polo Club (poem). Diana Drysdale then gave an insight to the story behind the poem.
Captain Con (Proussalis) then took a trip down memory lane. The Pilots Poem and the life of a pilot and training. The video was very funny (you had to be there).
Ian (Gunner) Toohill then gave an absorbing account of his time at the Australian Antarctic Base and his relationship with the explorer Dr Phillip Law. Dr Law's work over 40+ years was outstanding (but sadly not given the recognition he deserved). Well spoken Ian.
Ross McDonald – Q&A on Australian history and events. Congratulations to Denese who got the most number of correct answers (and the bottle of red).
Sonny and Cher (aka Brenda Ibels and Howard Turner) topped the evening off with appropriate costume and dance to the tune – 'I Got You Babe'. They certainly got us, and had us all in stitches. A fantastic finale to the RCE Local Talent Night.
My heartfelt thanks to Ross McDonald and all his team for putting on a great night. Well done team.
The RCE board met last Wednesday and discussed at length (as promised) Aquabox. The Board, after considering all submissions, have made the decision to wind up Aquabox. This decision was not made lightly.
A subcommittee comprising myself, President Elect - Frank Lynch, Director Aquabox - Dale Atkins and Treasurer - Michael Martin will formulate our exit strategy and present it at the next Board meeting.
Aquabox has been a great project for the RC of Eltham and all members should be proud of what it's achieved over 20+ years. However, falling donations, increasing costs and problems getting into third world countries have finally taken their toll on this project.
The Board formally thanked Dale Atkins for all his hard work and effort with Aquabox.
There is no meeting this week at HGC, and next week's meeting (social) is at Machan’s on the 27th. There is also the RC of Heidelberg Bushfire fundraiser on the 25th for those attending.

President John

Doctor Jokes
Doctor: "I'm sorry but you are suffering from a terminal illness and have only 10 to live."
Patient: "What do you mean, 10? 10 what? Months? Weeks?!"
Doctor: "Nine."
A doctor accidentally prescribes his patient a laxative instead of a cough syrup.
Three days later the patient comes for a check-up and the doctor asks: “Well? Are you still coughing?”
The patient replies: “No. I’m afraid to.”
Doctor: “I’ve found a great new drug that can help you with your sleeping problem.”
Patient: “Great, how often do I have to take it?”
Doctor: “Every two hours.”
Doctor says to his patient: "You have cancer and Alzheimer’s."
Patient: "At least I don't have cancer."
Doctor: “You're obese.”
Patient: “For that I definitely want a second opinion.”
Doctor: “You’re quite ugly, too.”
