Brilliant Festival weekend- feedback very positive, the feel good will offset the ache & pains!! This week we are in the hands of President David to drive us through the AGM. Any fresh items for the Agenda must be posted to Ann Lynch by 5pm Tuesday 24th November, 2015. Minutes of the 2014 AGM were circulated by Ann last Thursday.
This is a a "speaker free" week so Sub Committees can chat/plan together from approx 8.00pm. Pres. David will be assisted by Paul Cruse as chair and Michael Martin should have little difficulty gathering plenty of beans following Festival…just ask around Michael if u are short!! The program guy will be in Adelaide but will visit Bendigo Bank in advance!!
This week is also a great time to lock in the Xmas Party @ Ballara on Thursday 10th December, 2015. Cost is $55 per head (BYO wine @ $5 corkage per bottle) plus bring a special teddy on the night.

Dale Atkins: Transporting the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award), candidate to pick-up point at Kilmore on Monday and then back from Kyneton the following Sunday. Dale is attending a dinner on Wednesday with the group and invites anyone from RC Eltham who’d like to join him

Guest Speaker: No outside speaker this week but Rob Kilkullen (Festival Director), led a detailed briefing for the festival this weekend with contributions from the very hardworking team including Dale Atkins, Lou Bolzonello, Paul Kelly, Ann Lynch, Judy Sharp, Sally Squires, Mike Wetzler. Our sincere thanks to this committee which has done a superb job in preparing for another great Rotary Eltham Town Festival. All fingers crossed that the weather is kind to us.

Community Service Report
Community year so far:

Firstly a big thank you to the Community Committee Members for their time and commitment.

BBQ Trailer Refurbishment – John O’Callaghan has masterminded the refurbishment of the trailer, we now have the luxury of a swing out BBQ, hot water and a much improved BBQ trailer, all who have used the trailer since the modifications will agree practicably and ergonomically we are now set up far better. Cost of the refurbishment came in at $4,809, money well spent as we intend and hope to continue weekly BBQ at Eltham Lower Park for many years to come. We should congratulate John for his hard work.

Thanks to Ron Manison who continues the hard task of weekly rostering, a difficult job at the best of times, to make Ron’s life easy please let Ron know well in advance of days you are unavailable if you can. If you have been rostered on and can’t make it please do not contact Ron to talk about a change, it’s up to you to arrange swaps and fill ins. President David idea of bring a “Buddie” should be encouraged as it shares the load and ultimately means less BBQ per year, per member.
Congratulations to Ron Manison and Mike Englefeild,members who attended the Mr and Mrs Snag evening, I am sure you will agree with me that it was a fun night and way to show our appreciation for the efforts put in by members. Well done to Mr Snag (Paul Kelly), Mrs Snag (Judy Sharp) and the Snag achievement awardee Ash McFarlane.
Behind the scenes thankyou to Ken Paytner, backed up by Mike Wetzler for taking care of the trailers consumable stocks and snag ordering back at the shed, this is a vital part of the smooth running of the BBQ and much appreciated by the Community Team.

We have continued are ongoing support to Diamond Valley Learning Centre (DVLC) headed up by Alan McCleary .DVLC offers support to young teenagers who find it overly challenging to attend school following the regular VCAL Program. This year we have donated $2500,combined with 2 other Rotary Clubs and Rotacters they have received atotal of $6500, this has been used for Teacher Resource kits to coverCarpentry, Maths, Family Planning , City tour to introduce Legal Rights and access to Ombudsman, fitness program at Shadows Gym in Eltham, Literacy and Cooking classes.

October saw a Rotary team do the BBQ for The Eltham Toy raising just over $500 for their organization.

Ongoing support of $500 has been donated for the Sensitive Santa organization which offers children with autism the opportunity to meet and have their photo taken with Santa this Christmas.

Paul Kelly with a donation from the club community’s budget and some members help organized the assembly of a raised vegetable garden box for M S Watsonia.

We have continued our ongoing support for the Community and Volunteers of Eltham (CAVE), it was good to see the CAVE team at our recent meeting and hear from their President Jan Aitken who told us about all the good work they do with local school children in need of financial help whilst transitioning from Primary to High School.

THE Rotary Club of Eltham 2015 Festival
Just think. 14 years of Festival.
The first one was organised with 6 weeks’ notice. The council had been paying over $200.000 each year to “Professional” organisations to run the Festival. They gave us a small Morsel of that.
That’s where the Yellow shirts began. The club needed an identity and yellow seemed to fit with Eltham and blooming wattle trees.
On the day, we paraded in our Yellow Polo tops. It was great. The crowd were fed up with the rotten attitude of the private organisations that had run it previously. They asked questions, got polite replies and made us feel that we had done the right thing.
So 14 years on and we are still doing it. Most of the General Public are aware that Rotary is running the Festival and show their appreciation.
Along the way we picked up Sue who was a member for some years and does a fantastic job with the Fireworks.
There is always a danger in naming those that put in a great contribution, somebody always gets left off the list.
But a few standouts:
Firstly, as President David said in his speech at the Sunday night dinner, thanks to everyone for the effort put in.
Then from the Editors chair, Rob stepped up at the last minute to chair the Festival. Or rather Volunteers were asked to step forward, but everyone else stepped back. A great job Rob. Although you were pressganged it was still a great job.
Dale was always there, as was just about everyone else.
In the pivotal Role of Head Dragon, Ann did a fantastic job at Rotary Central. She was always there and managed to keep in touch with everything. Even the Radios were working. Front up to Ann, ask a question and she was immediately on the job providing an answer. If she didn’t have an answer it took seconds for her to find somebody that did. Don’t underestimate the role of Head Dragon, an extremely hard job and essential job very well done. Especially considering the number of Mikes we have.
Sally followed up last year with her Oval precinct again a roaring success. Looks like she has a job for life.
And adding to the “Mike” confusion was Andrew Cooper once again handling our PA.
The Rotary Limp.
Last year Dale had a very pronounced limp as he patrolled the grounds. This year the limp seems much better. But as Ron was guarding the bridge in the dark after the Fireworks, we could see a long thin form silhouetted, and limping towards us. Must be Dale. But no, Trevor has now developed a Rotary Limp. Then on Sunday, lo and behold, Dave was also developing a limp!!.
It seems that if you are over 6ft 2 working at the Festival you will develop a limp.
Then of course there are our Intractors and Rotaractors. Some in high posts may think them unnecessary, but The Rotary Club of Eltham knows better. Again this year they have taken over the Youth stage, which is now pointed a bit away from the main stage. The Fairy Floss Machine seemed to get away from them at times, with arms being encased in pink sugar. There is a mental image of a Rotaractor encased in a pink sugar Chrysalis that just won’t go away.
And the glowing sticks during the Fireworks showed that they have hit upon a great money spinner with their night time glow. An invaluable contribution

The Oval
Hi Oval Team,
Well, what a success the oval was! The weather couldn’t have been better and what a team effort.
The kids were happy, the exhibition clubs were happy. I think we made the RCE & Rotary Eltham Town Festival look great.
We sold 8 cartons of 24 bottles of water. Thanks to the Jenny Kelly, Jules, Judy, Victoria and all the other water sellers. Jim for getting supplies and ice to us. Paul Cruze made us an “Icy Cold Water $2” sign last minute and put it up, thanks.
Gary, Jules, Judy, Lauren, Alison, Con & Howard a great effort at the beginning on the traffic, parking duty and getting everyone bumped in. New this year we gave the exhibitors the oval map beforehand (surprised no one asked to be moved) and then marked the layout the night before, thanks David L and Rob K. It all went so smoothly, I had a coffee at 8am.
Rotary Races were a smashing success again and thanks to all who made it happen. Brett is amazing on the microphone. “Judges are you ready”. New oval permanent recruit Jill, was in her element. My girl Lauren …. thanks for being there all day darling. Jenny Maloney, Caitlin (Gordons granddaughter), John Robinson (via Clayton), Ian Kiddle (new to RCE), John Lynch (via Ann), Clayton, Jill, Gary, Diane, Wendy, Penny, Irene and many others were fantastic help on any job, that needed to be done.
The Rockwall money takings were $562 and it worked to draw the kids to the back of the oval. Armed with Graeme Miles and Gary W analysis of the Rockwall, the price goes up to $4-$5 in 2016. Thanks to Rockwall supervisors Graeme, Margot & Victoria, it was hot work.
The Community Stage worked really well at the back of the oval, and wasn’t it popular! The kids were everywhere. There was a lot of Facebook promotion of the program into the school Facebook pages. Sound issues were resolved this year, microphone had great range, thanks Andrew Stanley. In fact we all enjoyed hearing the children’s beautiful voices float down over the oval.
Laurens “Timetable” of events at the Rotary tent, worked a treat. Gary’s idea from last year, Lauren remembered this year and made it happen.
Ken did a great job on the sponsorship, signs and prizes for the oval and Rotary Races.
Rotary Tug of War team: Dale, Paul C, Clayton, David L, Jenny M, Michael Martin, Graham M and Paul K. Thanks guys for stepping up to the plate, after the Police pulled out 24 hours before. You were the best! We underestimated those Vikings though!!!
Finally, Gary on the microphone, giving the exhibitors a voice and making the oval a happy happening place. You do an amazing job. Thanks heaps.
So it was a big team effort! We all worked really well together and we can all be proud of our result. If I forgot someone I am sorry, but it was a really busy, long day. So a special thanks to you too.
To improve next year, we need your thoughts, so send through your ideas or criticism.

To all those wonderful girls who contributed their beautiful cooking with such a variety and colourful presentation as well as their efforts at the Stall, what a Team effort.
I thank you all so much for your efforts, enthusiasm and willingness to help.
Whilst the final count is yet to be advised we raised somewhere in the vicinity of $1250.00, a superb effort, a great day and again lots of fun and laughter.

RYLA
Festival Monday, that is the day following Festival, saw Dale transport our latest RYLA candidate Zac England to Kilmore.
What is Rotary Youth Leadership Awards?
It is a leadership development program run by Rotary. While participants can be any age, most events focus on secondary school students, university students, or young professionals. RYLA events are typically 3–10 days long and include presentations, activities, and workshops that cover a variety of topics, including:
Leadership fundamentals and ethics
Communication skills
Problem solving and conflict management
Community and global citizenship

The club always enjoys having our RYLArians visit after their Event to tell us all about it. Invariably, like most Rotary Youth events the main phrase is “a life Changing Experience”.

MOVEMBER
We seek to make a global contribution to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. This ambition underpins everything we do. It is the driving force behind our campaigns, funding strategy, and vision for the future.
Why men's health?
The state of men’s health is in a crisis. Simply put, men are dying too young.
Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. For men, this is not good news. On average, across the world, men die 6 years earlier than women.
Moreover, poor mental health affects men more than women: three quarters of suicides are by men. The World Health Organisation estimates that 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year. That’s one every minute.
The impact of prostate and testicular cancer on lives is substantial, with prostate cancer being the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases expected to almost double to 1.7 million cases by 2030.
Yet this gender-based inequality in health has received little national, regional or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy-makers or healthcare providers. This is exactly why the Movember Foundation focuses on men’s health. This is why Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from across the globe become a united voice every Movember, bringing vital funding and attention to the hidden men’s health crisis.
FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS I HAVE ORGANISED A MOVEMBER TEAM AT CRAIGIEBURN SECONDARY COLLEGE, NOW I HAVE STARTED ONE AT ST.HELENA SECONDARY COLLEGE. CURRENTLY WE HAVE A TEAM OF 10.
