Well, we survived another Club Assembly without too much stress so thank you to those who attended and especially to President Elect Kevin for his hard work in putting together the survey results.
Thanks to all those who attended the Anzac Day Dawn service it was a most moving event and gets bigger and better every year. Congratulations to Rob and Ken for their hard work in organising and running the morning in conjunction with the RSL. Thanks especially to our new members for attending the Anzac Day service.
We continue to incur costs for dinner for members who fail to notify Ann of their non attendance on a Thursday night. We are fortunate that we don't have a minimum number to meet each week at The Common but we do have to pay for the number of meals we book so please note the following.
Apologies will be accepted if notified to Ann by midday Wednesday - otherwise it will be assumed that you are attending and you will be responsible for the cost of the meal. Lou will invoice anyone who fails to comply and you will be expected to pay.

But what is Changeover?
Rotary Presidents are changed every year. This year President David hands the "Presidential Chain and Satchel" over to PE Kevin Hadingham.
There is a formal dinner, bring a partner, and a bit of entertainment. That where the fun begins and the incoming President starts their year. There is usually a bit of entertainment and a bit of dancing. In past years we have had a variety of raunchy entertainers, bands and singers. Further back in time we have had "revues" and before that we even had the brand new President arrive on stage clothed in a Nappy, just like New Year. Thoughts of the image puts a shudder down the spine, Kevin in a nappy is not something one would want to see.
This is an important event in the Rotary Year, make sure you mark it in your calendar.

This week we recognise RC Eltham 2015/2016 Youth Services in the Community. Sally Squires is chair and & will introduce an impressive list of those who lead or have participated in leadership development, community service and exchange programs during the year. We will meet the following;

Sally has a terrific Youth team within RC Eltham- Brett, Ian, Jill, Dale, Irene, Les & Victoria. Several speakers will be supported by their family so lets make sure they all feel most welcome.
President David will proudly host the evening. Makes sense for Brett Linsell to chair. Michael Martin will extract as many dollars as possible. The venue is The Common, 6.15pm for 6.45pm; $35 for two course meal, drinks at bar prices. Should be a top evening; plenty to get though so do try to keep Directors Reports tight.
During the past few weeks ‘Rat’ (Peter Roden), has addressed the Rotary Club of Frankston and Margaret Lane has addressed the Eltham Rural Group - both of which were very successful. Dave Laws organised a very efficient packing day with help from a number of volunteers.
Twiggy ( Ian Thomas), had a meeting with Stewart Batty from New Zealand in relation to emergency response kits. These have the full backing of NZ Rotary Clubs as well as attracting government assistance. This group is going to pre-position Aquaboxes in Fiji as well as manage and pay for the relocation to disaster areas at their expense. This is a tremendous result for us - well done Twiggy!
People are still questioning why we didn't send Aquaboxes to Fiji after the recent and devastating cyclone. NZ had adequate boxes on site and within days it was evident that what was required were funds for rebuilding rather than for Aquaboxes. Once again, our policy of sending boxes only to where they are most needed and managed properly was vindicated. I'm off to Cape York for nine weeks and in my absence, Dale Atkins is taking the helm.
Club Assembly brought up some conversation about Aquabox.
But what is Aquabox?
PP Gordon Birch returned from a visit to the Rotary Club of Wirksworth in the UK around 1999.
They had a club project to provide a box that could produce large quantities of clean safe water, as well as contain clothes and other essentials in the case of disaster.
The early days were spent packing Aquaboxes in Gordon’s garage in Research.
The box evolved. We gathered water from the pond in the Eltham Park and ran it through an Aquabox.
It was then tested by one of the Pathology Companies and found to be clean enough for use in an operating theatre.
Aquabox outgrew Gordons garage and a decision was made to either do it properly, or give it up. Much the same sort of question raised at Club Assembly.
It was decided that Aquabox should be able to “stand on its own” and we took on the Aquabox shed. The club uses the shed to store some of our stuff, for which the club contributes.
A separate board (reporting to the Club board) was set up to keep the functions separate. The guiding principal is that Funds raised for Aquabox should go directly to Aquabox without contributing to any "Extras".
To that end the Aquabox Project seeks to use Rotary Clubs at the destination disaster zone to distribute the Boxes. This is different to some other projects that send a “team”, at considerable cost, to distribute their relief packages.
There are a range of boxes, some evolving from the original Box, but now changed from Clothing to a collection of tools useful for a disaster, through to a box solely for processing clean pure water.
These are capable of processing a Petrol Tanker of water, and if required for an extended period of time we have provided additional Carbon Filters and Chlorine tablets to keep supporting the communities in need,
In a nutshell, Aquabox is our front line activity, it is self funding to the tune Hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and keeps our club at the forefront of the Rotary community both here and overseas.

Wheel Chairs for Kids
Fundraiser 27 May
On Friday the 27th May the Interact Club of Eltham based at Montmorency Secondary College is hosting a Wheel chair Marathon at Willinda Park Greensborough to raise funds to pay for rugged terrain wheel chairs to be sent to Timor Leste to change the lives of children without one.
The event starts at 3:30 pm at the end of the school day and will finish by 10pm that night using wheel chairs provided by Wheelchairs for Kids.
It involves teams of four taking turns to wheel each other around the athletics track in sample wheelchairs to raise funds pledged by sponsors, at an amount per lap.
This is a whole community event supported by the College and Rotary Club of Eltham. Members of the local community are encouraged to register by contacting Ian Toohill at the college toohill.ian.g @edumail.vic.gov.au for sign up and pledge forms, or call into the College in Para Road Montmorency for the forms and start raising funds.
The chairs which are made by retired Rotarian volunteers in Perth cost only $200 and are fully adjustable so can be a adapted as the children grow.
The aim of the activity is to raise at least $5000 which will pay for 20 chairs to be shipped to Timor Leste via the Rotary International logistics network, to change the lives of the recipients.
Over the past decade thousands of these wheel chairs have been sent to developing nations around the world giving children a new life and hope for the future.
The event will involve novelty races, entertainment and music. And will be a fun event for all involved.
The Rotary Club of Eltham Sausage Sizzle trailer will be on hand from 5:30 pm and participants will be able to buy snags for $2 with all funds going to the cause. Students can have one free. The canteen staff from the College, have also offered to provide their services with hot soup and snacks for all.
Businesses are also encouraged to ‘buy’ a wheelchair for $200 which is fully tax deductable and have their name on it when delivered to the recipient.
