Following the previous week’s showcase of the spectrum of youth programs we are engaged in, Diane’s presentation was very timely to remind us of the moral and legal responsibilities for child safety which accompany such involvement. The cases cited by Diane and other members demonstrated the realities of lives damaged by society’s past denial of child abuse and inaction against alleged perpetrators. Our club child safety policy documents are now on Clubrunner for your easy access. Take the time to read and absorb them. In particular please ensure you have a current Working with Children Check. The simple application process will be emailed to you by Ann.
Continuing the youth focus, the District Interact Trivia Night is on Saturday 20th May at Diamond Creek. It’s an opportunity to have a good night out for just $20 entry and to show your support for the Interactors and Rotaractors, who hopefully will be the Rotarians of the future.
This week’s Eurovision night promises to be a great night of fun and fellowship for Rotarians, partners and friends. Organisers, Gary, Ross and Mike, are looking forward to a bumper attendance. Not so sure about the quality of the contestants, but I can certainly guarantee it will be worthwhile coming to hear the inimitable Greg Champion as MC and adjudicator. Greg’s a great friend of Rotary. See you in Kiev!

The preliminary Eurovision Song Contest has now finished in the Ukraine and we now eagerly await the real thing in Eltham this coming Thurs night.
Anecdotedly there has been some serious vocal practice and costume preparation undertaken by some of the teams. In addition, there have been a number of repertoire.e changes made in an attempt to disrupt the oppositions game plans. These attempted show biz tricks will be obviously be looked upon poorly by our judging panel of Greg Champion (also the Contest MC and support act), Vicki Ward MP and Pres. Kev when awarding points.
As well as providing a nice change of pace to our usual weekly meetings it looks like being a night of great fun. Partners are more than welcome to join in and share the fun. Don’t forget to ham it up a bit with costume representative of your country's team.

The inaugural HealthAbility Community Wellbeing Expo will take place at Eltham High School on Sunday May 21 from 10am – 3pm. Event Ambassador and Olympic Gold Medallist Lauren Burns will be in attendance from 12pm – 2pm to talk all things wellbeing. Former AFL star and media personality Tony Shaw will be joining the fun as event MC, chatting with guest speakers, announcing activities and engaging with event attendees. The event features presentations, workshops and demonstrations, healthy food stalls, giveaways, a ‘kids zone’ and more! With over 30 exhibitors (including Rotary Club of Eltham) to visit and loads of activities there’s something for everyone. Fun for kids with a jumping castle, face painting, colouring stand and more!

Marion Hadingham: Bollywood Ball an outstanding success – raised $21,000. A total now of approx. $90,000 for the Muskaan project.

Natalie and Rob decided to come to the Bollywood Bedazzled Charity Ball after reading the front page article in the Leader. They thought it might be a night with a difference for their 50th wedding anniversary. Marion felt we should recognise their celebration with a gift of gold bangles which was well received. However they nearly fell through the floor when the Consul for India drew their ticket for first prize in the Grand Raffle – return flights for 2 to New Delhi and 5 nights luxury accommodation in Bhopal! What a spectacular way to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary.
I huge thank you to Melissa Anderson and the Helloworld Eltham team for donation of the flights and the Rashid family of Bhopal for donation of accommodation at the Jehan Numa Palace Hotel.
Michael Martin is also a grinner and winner of the Second Prize (3 night’s beach house accommodation at Sandy Point) and Paul Kelly’s work colleagues, Hanjit & Rupi Singh took the Third Prize of a night in the vintage spa suite of Stonehaven on Monsants boutique B&B at Bendigo.
2. Rotary Foundation - Mother’s Day Raffle
Irene Cant put together a great hamper of Mother's day goodies and wines donated by local businesses in support of Rotary Foundation. The draw last week saw First Prize to Kaye Smith, Second Prize to Judy Sharp and Third Prize to Lou Bolzonello.
3. The Horse Raffle!
A young man named Donald bought a horse from a farmer for $250. The farmer agreed to deliver the horse the next day. The next day the farmer drove up to Donald’s house and said “Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the horse died”.
Donald replied, ”Well, then just give me my money back”. The farmer said, ”Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.”
Donald said “Ok then, just bring me the dead horse.” The farmer asked “What are you going to do with him?”
Donald said, “I’m going to raffle him off”. The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead horse!”
Donald said, “Sure can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead”.
A month later, the farmer met up with Donald and asked, “What happened with that dead horse?”
Donald said, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $5 each and made $2,495”.
The farmer said, “Didn’t anyone complain?” Donald said, “Just the guy who won, so I gave him his $5 back”.
