President's Message - 15 September 2016
Laurie McQuade exemplifies the tireless and selfless commitment of the St John Ambulance volunteers to the safety of our community. Reliable and dedicated, they are too often taken for granted at public events. I was amazed when Laurie said we are only the second organisation to make a donation to St John Ambulance Diamond Valley brigade in 35 years.

Thank you Nick for your RBTB last week; a stimulating story of a cross cultural family journey as post war refugees from Greece to Poland and then onto Australia. How much richer we are as a community with the social and economic contribution of such European refugees commencing in the 50’s and 60’s and the subsequent refugees from Asia in the 1970’s, yet we are hesitant and fearful of current pressures for the intake of Middle East refugees. What will be the pathway for young families and children, just like the young Nick, currently looking for an escape from war and the opportunity for a new life?

There are many opportunities through Rotary where we can increase our awareness and understanding of different countries and cultures and show empathy and compassion to people affected by natural or man-made disasters. Rotary Friendship Exchanges, RAWCS volunteers projects, Aquabox and disaster relief programs spring to mind, but also at a local level, let us think of Nick’s story when we welcome refugees to Eltham at some stage.

President Kevin.

This week at Rotary
This week Margaret Lane has organised a Membership Night for prospective new members to have an introduction to what the Rotary Club of Eltham does and the projects we are involved in.

This night is a great opportunity for members to bring along friends and acquaintances to see first hand what we do each Thursday night and how we make a difference to the local community and internationally.

If you have any prospective members that maybe coming along this Thursday night to The Common please let Margaret Lane as soon as possible.

Margaret Lane will be Chair this week.  There is no Fine Master as this is will be held in a different format and more relaxed meeting with prospective members getting the chance to talk and meet club members.

The Week That Was 8th September
The Week That Was:
1. Alan McCleary: Very positive experience at Shadows Boxing Gym for DVLC students. All had a go at boxing - these experiences  are impacting  on students' well-being and fitness including willingness to exercise.
2.Brett Linsell: Volunteers needed to be involved with mock interviews for Year 10s at Montmorency S/C between Wed 26 Oct and Fri 4 Nov. If rostered for finemaster/duty please organise a replacement when required.
3.Ian Toohill: BBQ raised $680. Need better attendance at Interact dinner dance on 9 Sept if it is to be a success. So far only 3 x from RC Eltham. Pay at the door.
4.Margaret Lane: Membership evening next week – please all help to look after guests. The success of trip to Institute at Penrith still to be analysed but promising response from WA, SA and RC Melbourne in relation to introducing Aquabox.
5. Mike Englefield: Program update – Membership night 15 Sept, Susan Alberti 22 Sept, Speaker-free night/Prostate Support Group 29 Sept, DVLC 6 Oct. RC Greensborough holding a Golf Day 14 Oct to raise funds for Orange Laundry and Kids Under Cover.
6. Mike Wetzler: Jackets have arrived – need to be paid for and collected.
7.Irene Cant: The planned dance has been postponed until Feb/March next year.
8. Kevin Hadingham: Thanked Laurie from St John’s Ambulance for the diversity of events to which it responds in order to ensure community health and safety.

Speakers: Laurie from St John’s Ambulance spoke of the work of this organisation which commenced more than 100 years ago and now includes educating the public in first aid procedures. Laurie accepted a donation of supplies from RC Eltham and mentioned that it was only the second time in his experience in 35 years that their work had been recognised in this way! We look forward to having St John’s Ambulance at our Festival once again in November.

RBTB presenter was Nick Ikonomou who shared with us his family history spanning Greece, Poland and the eventual journey to Australia. Nick also talked about his career path from chartered accountancy to his position today as a corporate leadership coach. I’m sure we would all agree that this was an outstanding presentation and a demonstration once more that some of the most captivating stories can be found within our own RC membership.
