On Sunday I attended the home of Assistant Governor Chris Lang with President Elect Kevin Hadingham. This was a meeting to discuss the lessons learned in the last twelve months by several Presidents from our District as well as any advice we could pass on to those coming in as President in the next couple of months. There were some benefits gained that I am sure Kevin will find helpful in the next twelve months.
Last Thursday was enjoyable and I'd like to thank Dale Atkins for his very interesting and informative "Rotarian behind the Badge" presentation. Dale has lived a most interesting life and certainly achieved a lot; thanks to his early retirement he is contributing enormously to our Club.I look forward to the next R.B.T.B.

Dale Atkins: Update on Aquabox donations including $2,400 received from RC Yarrawonga/Mulwala. Other donations from RC Moreland and RC Pascoe Vale.
Sally Squires: Attended Sports Day at Montmorency S/C. A lot of fun including basketball with Wildcats, disabled athletes and students participating in wheelchairs. Diamond Valley Leader was present to report on the event.
Margaret Lane: Rotary jackets can be tried on by new members and others and ordered - at approximately $65.
Ann Lynch: Letters of thanks received for donations and community involvement from a number of organisations including Research Fire Brigade, WEHI, SES Eltham Unit, Eltham College (re Anzac Day), and Judge Book Village for contribution toward running of community bus.
Rob Kilkullen: Thanks to all involved in Anzac Day observance – a fantastic response. Likely to be ongoing. Great help from police in closing road for public safety. Attended RC Kinglake Ranges 4 wheel drive event in the high country to raise money for a Defensive Driving project for young people. Festival last year raised $37,000 thanks to a great team effort – will be another great festival this year under Jill’s direction.
Lauris Jones requested support for a fundraising dinner at Mihalis Greek Tavern, Box Hill from 6pm on Sunday 29 May. Proceeds will go toward an industrial kitchen and dining area for an orphanage in Sierre Leone in West Africa. Donation $55 a head. Would be wonderful to have a good attendance from RC Eltham.

Wheel Chairs for Kids
Fundraiser 27 May
On Friday the 27th May the Interact Club of Eltham based at Montmorency Secondary College is hosting a Wheel chair Marathon at Willinda Park Greensborough to raise funds to pay for rugged terrain wheel chairs to be sent to Timor Leste to change the lives of children without one.
The event starts at 3:30 pm at the end of the school day and will finish by 10pm that night using wheel chairs provided by Wheelchairs for Kids.
It involves teams of four taking turns to wheel each other around the athletics track in sample wheelchairs to raise funds pledged by sponsors, at an amount per lap.
This is a whole community event supported by the College and Rotary Club of Eltham. Members of the local community are encouraged to register by contacting Ian Toohill at the college toohill.ian.g @edumail.vic.gov.au for sign up and pledge forms, or call into the College in Para Road Montmorency for the forms and start raising funds.
The chairs which are made by retired Rotarian volunteers in Perth cost only $200 and are fully adjustable so can be a adapted as the children grow.
The aim of the activity is to raise at least $5000 which will pay for 20 chairs to be shipped to Timor Leste via the Rotary International logistics network, to change the lives of the recipients.
Over the past decade thousands of these wheel chairs have been sent to developing nations around the world giving children a new life and hope for the future.
The event will involve novelty races, entertainment and music. And will be a fun event for all involved.
The Rotary Club of Eltham Sausage Sizzle trailer will be on hand from 5:30 pm and participants will be able to buy snags for $2 with all funds going to the cause. Students can have one free. The canteen staff from the College, have also offered to provide their services with hot soup and snacks for all.
Businesses are also encouraged to ‘buy’ a wheelchair for $200 which is fully tax deductable and have their name on it when delivered to the recipient.

The Rotaract Club of Bugolobi, Uganda, launched a program to provide free health clinics, school supplies, and clean water to villagers in rural Kanabulemu. The club’s 1000 Smiles project has been selected as this year’s International Winner of the Rotaract Outstanding Project Award and will be honoured at the Korea Convention in June. The next meeting of District RFE due to have been held on the 22nd May has been postponed until later in July.
The team to Romania will be back by then, as will the team to Long Island, so they should provide interesting reports, particularly in view of the intention by both of those Districts to repeat these exchanges on a regular basis.
Dates for some of the proposed exchanges for 2017 - 18 should be firmed up by then, it is hoped that exchanges with Germany, Philippines and Southern Queensland for 2017 and Denmark and India for 2018will be confirmed.
Adding to those, particularly in 2018 might be a repeat exchange to Romania or Long Island.
