Our festival is very successful in bringing the Nillumbik community together, so we can certainly assist the incoming refugees to settle in. Sheree from Catholic Care clarified the roles of individual volunteers in support of refugees and also gave us some ideas about how our Rotary club could support the resettlement program - possibly in partnership with the Eltham Men’s Shed. With Doc’s liaison, I am confident we will soon identify a tangible project which will support the new settlers and also be of lasting value for the community.
 
After a solid weekend at the Festival it was good to unwind with the light-hearted Mr & Mrs Snags Awards Night. Congratulations to Ron Manison and ‘Michele’ Martin for a great session of fun, to Mr & Mrs Snag - Irene Cant and Howard Turner, and the Encouragement Award winners - Macca and Lyn Truran.
 
Howard has been a committed worker since joining our club, particularly in making significant improvements to the safety and ease of operation of the BBQ trailer. The Certificate of Appreciation is very well deserved.  
Just 4 weeks until our end of year Christmas Party on 15th December, so lock-in the date with your partners, family and friends and book and pay early for a great night of festivity and Christmas celebration!
 
Plenty to discuss this week in our committees as well as an eye-opening presentation on the “Sensitive Santa’ project. See you on Thursday.

The program for this week will be a combination of committee meetings and a 10min presentation/update on the Sensitive Santa project by Banyule City Council and Mill Park Library staff. The Community Service committee has actively supported this great initiative in past years and a donation will be made this week.
 
Sensitive Santa allows families with a child on the autism spectrum to have a photo with Santa without the common hustle and bustle and crowds. Families can book during certain times, which means no queues, and have their child or children photographed with Santa in an autism-friendly environment.
 
The following feedback was received from a mother last year...
 
“We attended the Sensitive Santa sitting with my autistic son and his two siblings this morning. It was wonderful. Santa was amazing.”

The Week that Was 17th November

Reports from the floor:
  1. Kevin Hadingham: Special thanks to Jill for her amazing work as Festival Director – have had several accolades about what a great event it was. Silent auction on 19 Dec in support of SALT Foundation. Alison at home and doing well.
  2. Jill Ramsay: Thanks to all who assisted at Festival – Ann has sent out surveys to complete.
  3. Dale Atkins: Hosted 17 x members of RC Doncaster at the Shed. Thanks to Max for organising. Received donation of $500 with promise of further support in future.
  4. Irene Cant: Xmas raffle for Foundation will be drawn at last dinner of year. $5 ticket or 3 x for $10. Need 2 x more volunteers for BBQ Eltham North Primary School on 7 Dec.
  5. Ian Toohill: Grace to Japan on Exchange Program on 25 Nov. Interactors raised $250 selliing Slushies despite bad weather.
  6. Alan McCleary: BBQ for DVLC raised $630 - $515 of which went in cash to DVLC. Kids did a great job. Organising 60 x packs toiletries via Pinchapoo (i.e. pinch hotel toiletries!), for St V’s refugees.
  7. Judy Sharp: Attended President Elect Development Seminar at Euroa last Sunday. Local group will meet regularly.
  8. Sally Squires: Attended DVLC Graduation night on Tuesday. VCAL students sent a thank you card for the support from RC Eltham. Very touching night listening to what some of these kids go through. Daniel and Natasha going to Somers Camp. RYLA dinner on 22 Nov – would like members to go to represent us and to provide support.
  9. Jim Phillips: Use of microphones – please turn off when not using. Observe Ken’s style!
  10.  Mike Englefield: Program coming up includes Sensitive Santa and committee meetings on 24 Nov and on 8 Dec an update on Interplast – medicos working and training overseas. End of year Christmas function on 15 Dec at Eltham Bowling Club.
Speaker: This week we were fortunate to have Sheree Limbrick (Deputy CEO Catholic Care), to discuss how local volunteers such as the RC of Eltham might become involved in the assimilation of the soon to arrive Syrian refugees at St Vincent's Care Services accommodation facility. Sheree spoke positively about meeting the many challenges facing the 110 refugees as they join the Eltham community.

1. Interplast Speaker organised for Thursday 8th December 2016 will be Abelard (Sonny) Gomez who is the District representative for Interplast.
 
2. Fundraiser for Muskaan – Bollywood is locked in for May 2017.
 
3. Wheelchairs for Kids Fundraiser for early 2017- Ian Toohill is at present liaising with representatives from Wheelchairs for Kids to find a suitable date. He will also check as to availability of Willandra Oval.  This year we hope to broaden the scope of the event and get more groups involved such as St Helena Secondary College and other sporting clubs. John Skinner to liaise with Brett Linsell and Sally Squires.  Also need to speak to Alan McCleary as to availability of Barbecue Trailer for the event.
 
4. Soloman Island Coconut oil Project (Makira Development Initiative).  Rotarian Lawrence Staub from the Rotary Club of Sunbury is currently in the Solomons and will return in early December and update us on the project and his contact with the Rotary Club of Honiara. We are still in the process of finding out what the RAWCS status of the project is and whether it could qualify for a Global Grant.  We hope to get Lawrence to give a presentation to the club early in 2017.
 
5. President Kevin has recently sent me an email about Operation Cleft which the International Committee will consider at our next meeting in early December.
 
 
RC Kinglake Ranges offers P-Plate Defensive Driving Courses

The Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges is sponsoring young drivers at Murcott's Defensive Driving Course at Sandown Racecourse on 27th November.
 
If you think your child or grandchild would benefit from the course, its only $50, because the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges covers the other $150.
 
Kinglake have invested $2,000 to cover up to 20 participants but have only had 5 sign up to-date.  They don't mind where the participants come from, they just want to see their money keeping young people alive and safe.
