Here I am wondering what to write this week when I opened the mail and found a letter with cheque attached! We have been successful in our application for a District Education Grant of $1500. Together with $1500 of club funds this grant of Foundation funds will double our contribution to CAVE this year, assisting 6 disadvantaged students transitioning from primary to secondary school. The work of Alan and Ron feverishly preparing the submission in the week before Christmas has borne fruit!
This is a tangible example of how The Rotary Foundation grants can leverage our club funds in support of eligible projects. This is a modest amount but it gives us encouragement to develop other global or local projects which meet Foundation criteria.
The District Conference saw many enquiries about our Aquabox and Muskaan school projects. Some commitments were made to Dale, Alan and Clayton for contributions to Aquabox, while Marion promoted our Bollywood Bedazzled Ball and sold several raffle tickets in the process. There was strong encouragement for both projects.
Yes, there were some interesting speakers, however I believe a key role of District is to cross-pollinate ideas and build synergies between clubs. This was successful in the House of Friendship and the Conference dinner. Would you believe we were on a table of Aquabox, Shelterbox and Disaster Aid representatives – and we all enjoyed it! Thank you to Trevor Smith for his excellent handling of our accommodation and Friday club dinner arrangements. Cheers, President Kevin

This week's speaker is County Court Judge, His Honour Paul Lacava who will present on the work of the County Court and the issues surrounding sentencing of sex offenders and young offenders with particular reference to how the courts deal with members of groups such as the Apex gang.
Members are encouraged to invite partners and legal associates to attend as this promises to be a very informative night.
Chairperson for the evening is Mike Martin. Fine mistress will be Victoria Clague.
The Youth Services team continue to provide support to the Rotaract Club of DV and Interact Club of Montmorency Secondary Club. On the first of June, a joint meeting between Rotaract and RCE will occur. We continue to try to move Interact members, and past recipients of RCE support into the Rotaract Club. This month Nick I is giving a presentation to Rotaract, and RCE has invited past recipients of funding to attend.
Student exchange occurs twice a year, continuing our long-standing relationship with the Rotary Club of Hondu.
NYSF has been another success, with students more informed and inspired to continue their studies in Science.
RYLA has been supported with 2 Rotaract members attending. Both will help at a BBQ and with Aquabox packing or demonstration.
RCE will sponsor a student from DVLC to RYPEN this year.
Youth Services Night will occur on the 4th May this
This week we will be graced by a presentation from our First Lady, Madam President, Melania………..sorry, sorry….. that should read Marion Hadingham. Marion will, for the benefit of newer members tell us about the origins of the Muskaan school building project, its progress over……can you believe it……… nearly 7 years and the future plans for further development of the school and the opportunities for its students.
The project has been one which our Club has supported over the years and which we currently support under our International Committee’s banner. Members have also provided indirect support by attending various Bollywood fund raising functions. In this regard a further support opportunity is imminent with the “Bollywood Bedazzled Charity Ball” to be held on Sat 6 May 2017 at the Manningham Centre, Doncaster.”
Chair for the evening will be International Director John Skinner, while Vicki Mackrell will lead the fine session.

Whilst the 2016 Rotary Eltham Festival has been and gone, it's now time to begin the planning process all over again. Taking into account the success of the 2016 festival along with feedback from members and partners, festival committee members, the public and Nillumbik Council, we have plenty of information on which to commence the planning for the 2017 Rotary Eltham festival. We hope members took the opportunity to read the 2016 festival survey feedback which was emailed to all members on February 10th, 2017.
This year, the festival dates are Saturday November 11th and Sunday November 12th so please take note and put these dates on your calendar. Whilst a team of twelve members primarily plans and coordinates everything to do with the festival, we need the support of all of our members and their partners in the weeks prior to and during festival weekend. A successful festival is the result of a whole of club effort as has been demonstrated year by year. So we look forward to everyone's support once again this year.
Coming out of hibernation, very slowly, is the festival director along with many of the 2016 festival committee members. The first meeting for 2017 is planned for Monday April 10th and monthly meetings will then follow, on the 2nd Monday of each month. The committee is almost finalised with some negotiations and arm twisting going on behind the scenes as we look to find a couple of replacements for members who aren't able to continue in their roles. As well, we're looking to address succession planning and are keen to split some of the existing roles to share the workload a bit more equitably. Watch this space! Once the 2017 Festival Committee has been finalised, this will be shared with members.
Soooooo ... it's full speed ahead! 2017 Rotary Eltham Festival, here we come!
