President's Message

 

Greetings from beautiful Daylesford on Sunday night after leaving our District conference in Bendigo. A very successful and enjoyable weekend of learning and laughing.Our club was very well represented again this year and I am proud to say that we won the award for most representatives who travelled the longest distance to conference. Thank you to all those who attended and especially Trevor Smith for his efforts in promoting the weekend. It was great to see so many yellow polo shirts promoting our club on Saturday and interesting to see many other clubs following our lead and wearing distinctive club shirts.
Congratulations to Ken Paynter, Trevor Smith and Alan McCleary  for their marvellous effort in completing the ride to conference, covering 600 kilometres and raising over $2,000 for Australian Rotary Health. The total raised by all of the riders was over $20,000. Thank you also to all who sponsored our trio. We acknowledge that Rotary is an expensive pursuit but it is rewarding to know that the money is put to such good use.
Of course Saturday night saw the fun continue at the dinner and I felt it only appropriate that some awards be acknowledged for outstanding performances.
1st place Michael Martin for his wonderful choreography including dancing on a chair - truly a 3 vote performance.
2nd place to Victoria Clague for showing us her outstanding dancing efforts, watch this space  - we may see her on Dancing With The Stars.
3rd place goes to Brett Linsell who complained loudly when the bar closed at 10.30 pm but dashed over to me and nearly knocked me over when I waved a jug of beer at him from 20 metres away. Special mention must go to the anonymous person who was seen riding a motorbike in the motel car park at midnight clad only in a small bath towel.
Last Thursday was a nice quiet night and gave everyone a chance to enjoy one another's company. See you on Thursday night where further tales of the behaviour or lack thereof from the weekend will no doubt be exposed. Have a good week,

This week we are especially fortunate to welcome a very busy fellow, Simon Robinson, Head Coach, Australian Boomerangs Men's Basketball team for athletes with an intellectual disability.
Simon will be accompanied by Jarrod Thomson, Boomerangs Team Captain and member of the Doncaster team. The Intellectual Disability Global Games were held in Ecuador last September. The Boomerangs played off for Bronze, but lost to Portugal, whilst the Girls team, the Pearls, won Gold.  RC Eltham donated $500 to Jordan East, one of the men's team members. Simon has been head Coach for the last 5 years and recently participated as a coach of the Victorian team  in the National Championships in Brisbane. Somehow he finds time to Head eLearning & Technology at St Columba's College, Essendon.
 
President David, fresh from District Conference, will lead with extra wisdom.
Mike Englefield will be in the Chair whilst Irene Cant will take all spare change. We will also celebrate the return of the Ride to Conference cyclists. The venue is The Common, usual time 6.15pm for 6.45pm; $35 for two course meal, drinks at bar prices. Should be another very special evening

What's it all about?
Donations In Kind is a Rotary Service that collects "stuff" at a central warehouse and distributes it in containers to where it is needed.   The Donations are In Kind with a Nominal Value, much better than sending cash.  This is your opportunity to see for yourself, and have a good night out.

Update on Rotahomes in Fiji

RC of Eltham members have built Rotahomes in  Koroipita, Fiji. Below is an edited update from Peter Drysdale OAM of the Rotary Club of Lautoka concerning the homes and Community Centre that were built. They were not damaged by Hurricane Winston.
KOROIPITA AND RURAL HOUSES
 
The Big Picture
 
- Death toll of 42 in Fiji (to date)
- Massive destruction north and East Viti Levu
- Zero structural damage at Koroipita
- Minor scouring of roads due to torrential rain
- Work team has not lost even one day at work
- Rapid progress on Sewerage Treatment System
- 3 huge concrete septic tanks built and distribution boxes and pumps / pipework soon.
- Plans advancing for Stage 3 week ending 01 July 2016
- At Koroipita and in the hills and cane belt there is a total of 943 Rotahomes (231 at Koroipita)
- From observations and reports there is zero damage
 
Damage in Lautoka City / Area
 
Lautoka City is relatively unscathed. There is massive tree and crop damage and power lines are down everywhere. I counted only 3 city houses unroofed.
 
On the borders of city and in rural areas here is the picture:
- Squatter settlements: about one house in 20 is unroofed; about one in 50 is demolished.
- Farmhouses and settlements ditto
- Massive crop damage: after 2 years of drought and now the sugar cane crop is flattened.
 
Hurricane Winston Saturday  20 February 2016
 
The hurricane moved very rapidly between the two big islands slamming the east and north coast of Viti Levu and the islands to the East, and the South Coast of Vanua Levu. It curved along the north coast to whack Tavua, Rakiraki, Ba and Lautoka (as usual).
 
The eye wall probably passed about 20 km north of Koroipita then west to the Yasawas and out to sea with gusts of 320 km/h (I believe). It moved rapidly at 25 km/h which meant the damaging winds lasted only 8 hours. If it had lasted the usual 12- 24 hours we would have had total devastation.
 
This was perhaps among the top 5 strongest hurricanes ever to hit Fiji but it was definitely the most destructive.
 
Rotary Club Response
 
Past President Rick Eyre sprang into action and mobilised three William’s and Gosling (WG) trucks way up north and east with 200 Emergency Shelter Boxes and 200 food parcels. He is also teaming up with the Bank of South Pacific team and others.
 
As always the Rotary / WG team has been the first to respond.
 
Editors Notes
The Rotary Club of Eltham has been involved in this project.  In YOP (Year of our President) Tony 2009-2010 a team went to work on the Rotahomes.  The largest part of our contribution was building the Communal hall.
 
Also PP Ross McDonalds son stayed on for some time and was instrumental in planning the Sewerage System mentioned in some new reports.
 
The  dissapointing aspect of this was that Rotary was not mentioned in the news reports.

It's not starting until May 2016. I got in early and have 24 tickets for Sunday June 12th at 1pm.
Dress Circle rows F & G in the centre block.
There is no reduced price for children. The normal price for this session is $120. My price is   $110
 
Money needs to be paid by April 12th.
 
Matilda the musical
This show is coming in March.
I have heard it is very good. A child's story directed at adults.
I have put aside tickets for Wed 7.30pm August  $110 which is an $11 saving for this session.
 
Money to be paid June 1st.
 
Funds raised for cancer research.
