The Youth programs night is a fantastic showcase of the many ways in which the Rotary Club of Eltham has opened up opportunities which help the youth in our community to achieve their potential. The commitment and engagement of Sally and her team was evident when many presenters last week thanked their assisting Rotarians by name, particularly one who moved a well-deserved vote of thanks to Ian Toohill for his work at Montmorency Secondary College. Sally reminded us “This is why we cook sausages.”
On Saturday night we turned our attention overseas to raise funds for the Muskaan school project to open up life opportunities for the children from the slums of Bhopal. A night of fun, colour and food for us, but the proceeds will bring life-changing results for Muskaan students. We certainly demonstrated how we can put the FUN into fundraising. A big thank you to the generous support of all Rotarians who attended.
Aside from Bollywood, the weekend also saw Eltham Rotarians busy at the Rural Group’s annual Paddy’s Market, the Sunday BBQ at Lower Eltham Park, and the Aquabox packing day at the shed. Quite a weekend for our club and quite a demonstration of “Rotary – Serving Humanity.”

Our Club projects and activities often involve members interacting with young people either in their capacity as volunteers or as beneficiaries of our projects. Knowledge of the required standard of our responsibilites to and for young people in these situations is paramount.
During her pre–retirement professional education career and also in more recent times, Diane Penkethman has had significant involvement in the development of Child Safety Standards in a variety of areas. This week Di will bring her professional knowledge and expertise to our meeting for our benefit.
Kevin Hadingham: Reminder re the long awaited Bollywood Ball coming up on Saturday night.
Dale Atkins: Aquabox packing day on Sunday 7 May. Dale presented on Aquabox at RC Ivanhoe and received a cheque for $750 as well as an undertaking for continuing support.
Gary Williams: ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ on 18 May. People have been allocated to various tables representing different countries and each table will perform two songs. Dress up for the occasion. Will be prizes so need a good attendance.
Ian Toohill: Reminder about Wheelchairs for Kids in September. Interact trivia night at Diamond Creek on Saturday 20th May.
Rob Kilkullen: Theatre evening to ‘Book of Mormon’ was very successful and raised $650.
Graeme Miles: BBQ last week went well and took $990. Well done to the team.
Mike Englefield: Next week’s presentation by Diane Penkethman on new Child Safety Standards legislation in Victoria and implications for all community organisations including Rotary.
Irene Cant: Raffle to be drawn next week for Mothers' Day.
Presenters this week were students from Montmorency S/C, Eltham High School, Eltham College and Diamond Valley Learning Centre who were sponsored to attend a wide range of Youth Services programs during the past year. These included Rotary Youth Exchange, National Science Forum, RYLA, RYPEN and Operation Newstart. Also present were representatives of Rotaract and Interact. Our thanks to all involved in this great work and as always, the Youth Services evening was a reminder of just how critical these opportunities are in the lives of our local young people.

My two year term as Membership Chair is drawing to a close and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who have supported me in this role. Both for the wonderful presentations made at each of the Membership events and for the referral of potential members. I would like to acknowledge the amazing contribution of Kaye Smith, "The Membership Committee". Every request to Kaye was met with professionalism and enthusiasm!
I am pleased to announce that as of 1 July (when John Roberts and Ernita Songahid join our club,) we will have met our target of 10 new members. As mentioned previously "prospective members join Rotary to make a difference, and they stay because of the friendships they make". So please let's look out for both existing and new members, make them welcome and include them in our activities.
