BUSHFIRE CRISIS
The bushfires are still burning and likely to continue for another 6 to 8 weeks. Recovery will be a long process and we will need to be prepared for the long haul. Our fundraising has started with a great effort by Frank, Ross and Alan Field, who attended the Farmers Market on Sunday and raised nearly $1000 in donations, with Local Food Connect looking at matching what we raise (see report from Frank Lynch).
We will continue the fundraising at the Market over the next few weeks. Thanks to all those that have volunteered. We will be looking at other ways to raise funds, as well as committing some of our current funds to the bushfire appeal. The exact amount will be decided by the Board and the club informed.

FIRST MEETING 23 JAN 2020 AT HGC
This year we are starting the year on Thursday, 23rd January at Heidelberg Golf Club. Our guest speaker is Don McQueen, who is a bush balladeer (see promo from our Program Director, Alison Cooper). This looks to be a great night to start the year off, with Australia Day coming up, and I would urge all Rotarians that can attend to do so.

Cheers,

President John

Bushfire Appeal

The Eltham Farmers’ Market has teamed up with the Rotary Club of Eltham to provide assistance to farmers in our region who have been impacted by bushfire. Our aim is to provide help, in a very targeted and timely way, to farmers with immediate needs. For example food for their stock, veterinary support, fencing or other necessities.

Over the next few weeks Rotarians will be at the market shaking a Bushfire Relief tin. Please contribute if you can.
Bushfire Appeal Report
Thank you for your contributions, what a great outcome. Thanks Sally for the rushed signage job, they look great. Special thanks to Chris Chapple for giving Rotary the opportunity to raise funds for fire victims, and that The Farmers Market will also contribute to our final total. As discussed, I will contact Kerry Murphy in Myrtleford re information and local contacts for Rotary Clubs to distribute funds. Thanks Alan for your support which enabled me to leave early.

Next week, John and Roma take over the batten, followed by John and Kerry. We will then reassess the opportunity of another Sunday.

Chris is storing our chairs and signs, I have left some plastic ties for the signs, it would be good to have a few extra.

Collection Details (from Ross McDonald):

Our first week (of four) with our team collectors (Frank Lynch, Alan Field and Ross McDonald) collected a total of $939.55.

The cash donation in the two Rotary bins at the Farmers’ Market, as counted, was $706.55. Add to this $133 additional donation from a stallholder (as advised by Chris Chapple but not yet received in cash), and $100 cash donation from a local Eltham resident and his wife outside Ferguson's café, after the Farmers’ Market. Here there was a request to assist, if possible, farmers/residents who had no drinking water, much of it being made undrinkable due to fire retardants.

Joke of the Week

A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says: ‘What the hell was that all about?’
