THIS WEEK AT ROTARY 12th NOVEMBER

This week Ron Manison will present the "MR & MRS SNAG AWARDS 2014/2015".
A Long awaited evening, lots of light hearted fun to recognise those who have contributed so willingly to the success of Sunday x Sunday @ the Lower Eltham Park.
Ron has arranged for a special "guest" to recognise the "best" couple over the 12 months, also to present an Encouragement Award.
You just have to be at The Common this Thursday evening if you (and your partner) have played the important Sunday game through the year.
Ron has also arranged for a representative of CAVE ( probably Secretary Dianna) to give a brief report on their activities over the last 12 months and, in turn, receive a cheque of support from RC Eltham.
President David should be in good form after a week in & around SE Queensland…no, not the Cricket!!
Ron Manison will chair whilst Ann Lynch will strip us of our beans. Go for it Ann…the last two Finemasters have been very cerebral but not too many beans in the box!!

From the floor
Paul Kelly introduced Marina who thanked the club for the planter box that was erected at the MS residence in Watsonia. Lettuces planted are growing well in the few weeks they have been in and providing much joy to the residents.
Festival update were provided by Rob Kilcullen. Thanks to those who have volunteered with manpower for the weekend.
A reminder from Ken for members to sign up local business sponsors. They will be entered in the raffle to win a Hot Air Balloon Prize for two people. (A Magnificent Prize Ed.)
Ann Lynch gave details of the Post Festival dinner at the House of Salad and also the Christmas Function at Ballara.

Terry Oakley
A Warrandyte resident, Terry’s involvement and interests include:- Lions District Governor 2003/2004; Life/Business Coaching & Mentoring; Deputy Convenor of the Diamond Valley Prostrate Cancer Support Group and Convenor of the Warrandyte Prostrate Support Group.
Terry acknowledged the Rotary Club of Eltham and the important work members do for the community and thanked RCE and Dale for allowing the Prostate Support Group to have a stand at the upcoming festival. Terry also acknowledged the work of all Rotary clubs and donations that support the cause of prostate cancer.
Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, Terry’s topic for discussion was prostate cancer. The Information he provided included:-
An explanation about the size of the prostate: a Ferrero Rocher and/or walnut representsthe normal size whilst a navel orange doesn’t! The latter example isn’t uncommon and nor does it mean that it’s definitely prostate cancer. To emphasise the the size Ferrero Rocher Chocolates were available for sale following the meeting. Very nice.
The prostate starts to increase in size from puberty.
One is Usually unaware that you have prostate cancer until something noticeable happens.
A percentage increase in PSA (prostate-specific antigen measured on a 10 point scale) over a period of time can indicate the possibility of prostate cancer. In Terry’s case, his PSA went from 4 to 9 in ten months.
Methods of diagnosis are changing, even in last 12 months. Less invasive, an MRI can now confirm the existence of cancer and location.
Treatment can include a much improved micro-fine radiation. There is now a new facility in Richmond.
Prostate cancer rarely kills men. WHAT KILLS MEN IS LACK OF ACTION!!! In reality, men are their own worst enemy and hence partners are the key because they nag until there is action!
Marguerite Marshall
An Eltham resident, Marguerite is a journalist, having written for publications including The Age, The Herald, The West Australian and the Post Courier in PNG.
She authored the history book Nillumbik Now and Then. For light relief she loves to share jokes.
As the author of a collection of 400 jokes in a book titled “Best Aussie Jokes,” this was the topic of her presentation which covered the history, psychology, health impact, national and gender differences of jokes and Australian humour. The jokes, many of which came from friends over 10 years, have all been edited for consistency and style and importantly, Australianised.
To illustrate certain points, Marguerite shared some interesting examples:-

Some Australians tend to have a black/dark sense of humour as evidenced by the naming of a public swimming pool after the then Prime Minister, Harold Holt, who disappeared and presumably drowned off the Portsea back beach.

Some Australians also share a very strong anti-authoritarian stance. E.g. “Nappies and politicians, both should be changed often for the same reason!”

Sarcasm/poking fun is a feature of humour and is clearly observed in TV shows such as Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Two and a Half Men.

Different cultures/nationalities have different styles and a varying appreciation of humour and jokes. In a 2011 poll of 15 countries (Australia wasn’t included), Germany was the least funniest whilst USA was deemed the funniest.

Laughter is very good for us. It makes us feel better, it can provide respite from pain and a new source of hope. Stress reduces, muscle relaxation is aided and heart, lungs, muscles and endorphins are stimulated.
REMEMBER though … Practising safe humour is the golden rule!

FESTIVAL UPDATE

The Festival Committee had their final committee meeting on Monday.
A Final roster draft has been emailed to members, any requests for changes must be received by Paul Kelly by 5pm this Friday.
The briefing meeting for all members and volunteers will be held on Thurs 19th Nov. Please make every effort to attend as there will be new information and activities this year. helpers)
Lanyards will be distributed at this meeting.
A reminder that ALL volunteers must sign in at the Rotary Tent at the commencement of their shift. (Club Members and Others)
The Festival Celebration Dinner will be held at House of Salad at 7.30pm on Sun 22nd Nov.
$25 per head, BYO and licenced (corkage payable to restaurant on the night).
Garlic pizzas and foccacias for starters, pasta for entree, pizzas for main course.

MOVEMBER
|
We seek to make a global contribution to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. This ambition underpins everything we do. It is the driving force behind our campaigns, funding strategy, and vision for the future.
Why men's health?
The state of men’s health is in a crisis. Simply put, men are dying too young.
Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. For men, this is not good news. On average, across the world, men die 6 years earlier than women.
Moreover, poor mental health affects men more than women: three quarters of suicides are by men. The World Health Organisation estimates that 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year. That’s one every minute.
The impact of prostate and testicular cancer on lives is substantial, with prostate cancer being the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases expected to almost double to 1.7 million cases by 2030.
Yet this gender-based inequality in health has received little national, regional or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy-makers or healthcare providers. This is exactly why the Movember Foundation focuses on men’s health. This is why Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from across the globe become a united voice every Movember, bringing vital funding and attention to the hidden men’s health crisis.
FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS I HAVE ORGANISED A MOVEMBER TEAM AT CRAIGIEBURN SECONDARY COLLEGE, NOW I HAVE STARTED ONE AT ST.HELENA SECONDARY COLLEGE. CURRENTLY WE HAVE A TEAM OF 10.

AQUABOX DIRECTOR'S REPORT
|
|
The Aquabox team has been busy fundraising, particularly with Team Aquabox raising almost $10,000 at the recent Melbourne Marathon. The entire club, not only Aquabox should be so honoured and pleased to have members of the calibre of "Graham 26 Miles". Well done all involved.
Last Tuesday we had the Melbourne Cup BBQ at Redbox Winery, put on by the Rotary Club of Nunawading with help from RC of Mitcham and RC of Eltham.
$750 was again donated. Colin Spencer has sold Redbox, so we will have to work on the new owners to keep up the tradition. We thank Colin and his wife Glenys for their support over the recent years and wish them well in the new phase of their life in Kinglake. Hopefully Colin will now have more time to visit us at our meetings where we can formally thank him.
Dale Atkins has stepped up to the plate becoming quite a great "warehouseman" complete with forklift truck licence. The Rat and I will be spending 3 days at the Zone Institute, fortunately this year it is in Victoria at Etihad stadium, but unfortunately it is over the Festival weekend so we won't be there at the "Park". The importance of presenting Aquabox to present, past and future DG's is far too great an opportunity to pass.
The feedback we have received from Nepal has been very positive. Twiggy has been liaising with the Philippines, fortunately they appear to have the relief effort for the recent typhoon/flood under control. However we do have Aquaboxes pre positioned if needed, reinforcing our policy of pre positioning boxes for immediate deployment.
The key to Aquabox success is maintaining the enthusiasm and planning in the quiet times, as we know, every time we turn on the news, we could have a major disaster on our hands.
And we need to be ready.
Aquabox not only has enormous success with the International Aid effort, but it puts both our Club and District 9790 in a great light. We don't conduct Aquabox for the kudos, but it is reassuring our efforts are acknowledged and appreciated, especially with the DG Richard LUKE. The entire club must take a bow, because so many aspects of our club revolve around or support Aquabox.

The Choir, with a guest performance by the Murrindindi Golden Oldies, will bring the harmonies of the Welsh Valleys to the Alexandra Town Hall on Saturday November 14 starting at 7:00pm.
This will be a unique opportunity to hear a wide variety of music, including much loved traditional Welsh songs by this fantastic Choir who are recently returned from a tour of England, Wales and Ireland that included a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The choir toured the United Kingdom where it became the first choir outside Wales to sing at the “1,000 Voice Festival” at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Rotary Alexandra are coordinating the visit assisted by the Shire of Murrindindi, Alexandra Community Health and St Andrews Uniting Church Alexandra. Please note tickets are limited and are sure to sell quickly, book now so that you will not miss being be part of this very special occasion."
