Blue skies, aquamarine waters, and fleets of yachts tacking into light southerly sea breezes. What a fantastic backdrop for the social luncheon on the deck at Rye. A big thank you to our hosts Lyn and Graeme. Their warm hospitality and generous donation of the delicious food, coupled with a monster raffle, not only ensured a memorable day for all but also resulted in a healthy donation to the Rotary Foundation.
Let's maintain this momentum of fun and fund-raising for the Foundation Centenary Year with your support (and that of family and friends), at the Dance Party on 3rd March. A great night of entertainment and dancing with a top band.

Our first meeting for 2017 kicks off with a bang with our speaker being former Victorian Police Chief Commissioner , Kelvin “Kel” Glare AO, APM who will regail us with stories from his policing career and a bit more detail behind the contents of his recently published book “The Angry Ant’. Kel , dare I sat it, is a renowned straight shooter……. so expect the unexpected.
It promises to be a night full of interest for both members and any guests who you would like to also invite.

TheRotary Foundation has confirmed negotiations for the release of a movie in February 2017 to raise funds for our Polio Eradication program. The Movie is HIDDEN FIGURES and the Rotary Club of Nunawading has booked Hoyts Forest Hill for Monday 13 February. The film's official Release Date in Australia is Thursday 16 February.
If we fill the cinemas we will raise approximately $ 1,200 for Polio Eradication and it will be matched 2 for 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. An enjoyable evening out to preview a "feel good" movie will contribute $ 3,600 towards Rotary's 30-year Project.

ELLIMATTA programs – a key element in Kinglake post disaster recovery
What is the end point for disaster relief? Is it after the first response provision of fresh water, shelter, humanitarian goods and medical assistance to sustain life? Is it after the rebuilding of physical infrastructure of water supply, sanitation, power, roads and communications and buildings? Is it after the recovery of the scarred landscape, be it burnt out forests, eroded coastlines, landslips etc? Such physical aspects of the rebuilding of a community are tangible and visible; far less tangible but long lasting are the emotional scars of the disaster on the survivors and the decimated social fabric of the community.
The Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges (RCKR) members not only personally suffered the trauma of the disaster, but also, as a group, played a significant role in co-ordination of first responses, the physical rebuilding of community infrastructure and most importantly providing a piece of the social fabric of the community.
In the aftermath of the Black Saturday Bushfires, Rotary International raised funds to support the Kinglake community recovery. Through this effort, the Ellimatta Youth Space was established as a dedicated facility for the youth. It was proudly opened by RI President Ray Klinginsmith in 2016. With increasing family breakdowns, drugs and alcohol abuse and disengagement, youth centres have the facilities, support and contacts to assist youth through to adulthood.
Ellimatta provides a range of place based or outreach services for young people including: Skill development, Holiday programs, Life skills, Drop in programs, Homework programs, Recreation and leisure events, Arts programs and other programs that support young people’s participation and engagement.
All Eltham Rotarians have been invited to a special Combined Rotary Dinner at Ellimatta Youth Space in Kinglake on Tuesday 14th February.... a great opportunity to understand the role of Ellimatta in the community recovery. The meeting will hear from the President of the Ellimatta Youth Centre, tour the facilities and witness the special announcement of further Rotary and Government Assistance.
As a sponsor of the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges we have a vested interest in the success of RCKR and the Ellimatta youth programs. They are both key elements in the long term post disaster recovery/rebuilding of the Kinglake community.

Hi Sally and Rotary Eltham,
I only just recently returned from the NYSF trip, and I have to say that it is one of the most significant things I have ever done in my life. Not only have I learned an amazing amount about a wide variety of scientific subjects, but I have made friendships with other students which I am confident will last for many years to come.
I attended perhaps half a dozen lectures, which ranged from critical thinking workshops to entrepreneurial info sessions and even the talk on the dangers of anti-science and politics in science. My interest group, which was a chemistry group, went on lab visits to federal forensic labs, university medical and chemistry facilities, and even the Australian Defence Force Academy. Throughout my visits I have made nitrogen ice cream, tested the composition of aspirin, and examined a mock crime scene for various clues.
The social aspects of the forum were a very important component, and I took part in swing dancing, went to formal dinners and Rotary evenings, and visited important Canberra landmarks such as the Telstra Tower and the National Museum. I've made so many genuine friends from around Australia and even New Zealand who share a passion for science, and I'm already planning to meet up for study sessions with some of my fellow Melbournians.
I truly thank all of you for your generous support in helping me attend this forum, the fact that you were willing to assist me means so so much. My passion for science and STEM as a whole is stronger than ever, and I have a much better idea of what direction I wish to take in the future.
I will be more than happy to attend and speak at any future Rotary meetings or events and share my experiences with everyone. Even if I am unable to present at any meetings, I would still appreciate the chance to attend, I am really hoping to put myself out there and get even more involved with the community this year.

Please block off the dates in your diaries for a stimulating, entertaining and generally fun filled few days up in Shepparton.
The weekend, kicks off with the Sports Day and dinner on Thursday the 16th ( golf, cricket, bowls, cycling and guided walks around Shep. )
The conference venue is the Riverlinks Eastbank Centre, Welsford Street, Shepparton. Proceedings begin officially at midday on Friday 17th and will end on Sunday after lunch.
