Gary summed it up last week along the lines of “We’re pretty serious about the Rotary things we do and occasionally it does us good to break out and have a good laugh at ourselves.” There were certainly lots of laughs and just the right amount of stupidity to keep life in perspective!
 
Thanks to Eurovision organisers Gary, Ross and Mike and a big thumbs-up for Dale’s work in rounding-up and subtitling the video clips. (I wonder if he can edit out the soundtracks of the video clips filmed on the night?)
 
Mike wasn’t there on Thursday night but was clearly active organising other significant events. Did you notice that the Englefield celebrations for Mike’s 70th on Friday night just pipped Pippa’s wedding celebrations in the UK village of Englefield the following day? Obviously some connection there!
 
We are aware of members, partners or family who are on the mend following significant illness, operations or procedures and we are very grateful for the continuous advances in the medical sciences. The Walter & Elisa Hall Institute is leading the charge in many of the too hard areas of medical research. This week we will see the synergy which can happen between Rotary support for WEHI and sponsorship of a student to the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Another example of the outcomes which come from our fundraising functions and sausage sizzling Sundays.

This week at Rotary

Speaking at our meeting this week are Walter & Eliza Hall Institute reps Sally Cane (Supporter Relationship Manager) and scientist researcher Brigette Duckworth who will present on her immunology research. Brigette lives in Eltham, and has previously been sponsored by Rotary Club of Diamond Valley in 2012 to participate in the National Youth Science Forum. She has gone onto completing honours at WEHI and is due to soon start a PhD at the institute.
 
The Club will also present to Sally and Brigette a cheque for the funds raised at our January 2017 Williams/Kilcullen organised spit-roast.

Reports from the floor:
  1. Alan McCleary: Council has been in touch about A frames which need to be tied up. $1,400 has been donated to the Eltham Historical Society toward scanning historical documents. Their work will be presented to RC Eltham later this year.
  2. David McFarlane: Entertainment books selling out. Please take for family, friends and work colleagues.
  3. Jill Ramsay: Reminder re HealthAbility’s Wellbeing Expo on Sunday at Eltham High from 10am to 3pm.
  4. John Skinner: Update on Jim Phillips who has had a bit of a setback. Needs to rest for next couple of weeks.
  5. Brett Linsell: A joint meeting in first week of June with Diamond Valley Rotaract.
  6. Ian Toohill: Reminder re Interact trivia night on Saturday 20 May.
  7. John O’Callaghan: WEHI presenting at next week’s meeting.
  8. Kevin Hadingham: Thankyou card received from Judge Book Residents’ Association for our assistance with the bus. BBQ on Sunday for Muskaan – need someone extra to volunteer/swap. A very busy weekend coming up for RC Eltham.

Thanks to the 20 members who have already supplied their Emergency contact details, much appreciated by the busy secretary.
 
On the advice of the District Insurance Officer, we are compiling a list which will be kept on site for LEP BBQs, Festival and any other occasions where club members will be volunteering. This will be attached to the Volunteer Registration sheet.   A copy will also be kept in the President's briefcase for meetings. 
 
For the list to be completed promptly, it would be appreciated if the remaining members who have not given these details please let me know by email ajlynch@bigpond.com or text message 0419 008 759.
