What a great celebration of our nomination of Sgt Mitchell for the Peter Toomey Memorial Community Police Officer Award. It was an honour to make the presentation to someone we all respect as an integral part of our community and a key contributor to the success of our public events - particularly the Eltham Festival and the Anzac Dawn Service. Sally summed it up succinctly on the club’s Facebook page “Congratulations Mitch, Eltham loves you!”
Following the meeting, the Board met to assess the level of commitment for the Foundation Dance Party on 3rd March. Despite Irene’s tireless effort in setting-up what promised to be a great night of fun and fundraising, ticket sales and commitments of members were disappointing and insufficient to ensure we could cover the costs of the band and hall hire. A very frustrating situation for everyone and the unenviable decision was made to cancel the event. It is important to recognise and appreciate the level of input which goes into planning our various club functions and to give our attendance support whenever possible.
This week our own cycling “tres amigos” (Ken, Alan and Trevor), will briefly outline their Ride to Conference fundraising for Australian Rotary Health (ARH). This will be an introduction to PDG Phil Clancy’s presentation of the ARH focus on much needed research into the understanding and management of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is difficult for us to comprehend the trauma that some people have experienced and the lifelong effects it has on their lives. Emotional trauma is not visible but can be just as debilitating as physical trauma. This promises to be a very informative night.
PS. Whose birthday is it this Thursday?
Cheers, President Kevin

This week we focus on the Australian Rotary Health program and, in particular, mental health. Our guest speaker is PDG Phil Clancy, Chair of the District 9790 Australian Rotary Health committee. Phil will address the committee's focus on one of the communities major health issues issues viz. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. He will enlighten us about the work our District is doing in the areas of education/support of this community wide ailment.
The funds raised by the Ride to Conference participants including our own Ken Paynter, Trevor Smith and Doc McCleary will go to Australian Rotary Health and will be specifically applied to the Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome program.
Kevin Hadingham: Thanks to all who supported the function for the Ellimatta Youth Centre which was established in response to an identified need to support the youth of Kinglake affected so devastatingly by the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. Originally launched by Rotary International, Ellimatta Youth is now becoming a more independent operation through fundraising activities.
Jill Ramsay: A couple more volunteers needed to man pedestrian crossings on 25/26 Feb at Jazz Festival - considered to be one of the top 20 such festivals in the world. A free event open to all and supported by the community - including our local police. Our volunteers help to fly the flag for RC Eltham.
Alan McCleary: The garden at St Vincent’s nursing home doing well and staff report it has rejuvenated the place – residents are enjoying it.
Mike Englefield: Upcoming events - Feb 23 Australian Rotary Health/Ride to Conference update. 2 March to be confirmed, 9 March ‘Behind the Badge’, 16 March an informal meeting for those not attending conference, 23 March presentation by a County Court judge, 30 March Marion Hadingham will present on the Muskaan project
Brett Linsell: Rotaract meeting on Mondays at 7.30 pm Eltham Hotel – all welcome. Come earlier for dinner and a drink.
Margaret Lane: Presentation at RC Prahran with Jill Ramsay – great that the DG had been in the Cambodian village where Aquaboxes were located and was aware of Peter and Ian’s work. Donation of $1,500 from RC Townsville as a direct result of talking about Aquabox at the Eltham Festival.
Dale Atkins: Can confirm that the Kinglake Melbourne Cup lunch raised $1,800 for Aquabox. Committee meeting at Eltham Hotel 6.30/7.00pm on Tuesday 21 February – all welcome.
This week we honoured Sgt ‘Mitch’ Mitchell – RC Eltham’s nominee for the District 9790 ‘Peter Toomey Community Police Award. Mitch was introduced by Rob Kilkullen and presented with a Club certificate by President Kevin in recognition of his outstanding commitment and service to the people of Nillumbik. Mitch epitomises the spirit of the award and his contribution to the successful running of the Eltham Festival and the Anzac Day Service are just the tip of the iceberg when looking at his contribution across our local community. Our nomination of Mitch will be considered for the 2017 Award which will be formally announced and presented at the upcoming District 9790 Conference in Shepparton.
Here is an update from our Foundation Chair, Irene. Next week we'll hear from Dale on Aquabox... Ed
The Dance, as everyone who has read President Kevin's recent email, is now off the agenda for March 3rd.
The retailers who kindly gave of their wares towards the silent auction, or the raffle will be acknowledge at some later stage when we make a decision on which next Rotary function to display the goods as we had intended.
There maybe time in-between other club commitments to officiate over another social function/fund raiser. If enough interest is given, a planned bus trip to Curly Flats Winery to sample some of their fine wines in conjunction with sit down lunch or catering of finger foods.
We're waiting for more information from the Bus Company as to costs.
The autonomy of individual Rotary Clubs with their diversity of members interests, skills and resources is a core strength of Rotary.
Of course when you bring together 2 or more clubs there are multipliers of skills and resources, enabling sharing of workloads and/or opening up opportunities for larger and more diverse projects and fellowship opportunities. Participation by Rotarians from other clubs in our Timor Leste RAWCS trip brought other skills to the team and the support of clubs from other districts contributed significantly to the social and financial success of the 2015 Bollywood Ball.
Within our District we have 65 diverse clubs with whom we can share ideas, resources and skills. They provide great support for our Aquabox project and we in turn participate in shared or cross-district projects such as Interplast, Donations In Kind, Rotary Friendship Exchanges etc. The Annual District Conference brings the clubs together in one place to share fellowship, ideas and projects.
It’s a good place to learn and celebrate the diversity of Rotary.
