06 February 2020
Sally Squires (President Elect Nominee) got last week off to a great start. Using Tennis as her theme and our knowledge (or rather lack of) to elicit numerous fines from those present. Great job Sally.
It was with great pleasure that I, along with Frank Lynch (President Elect), inducted former Rotarian Alan Field back into our club (see Alan’s response included below). Alan has had a lot of experience in Community Service as an Advocate, and this can only help our club.
It is with sadness that I can inform the club that former Rotarian and PHF Bernie Lamers passed away last Friday. I have passed on condolences from the club to Bernie’s family via Frank Lynch (as the family comes to terms with Bernie’s passing). Funeral arrangements will be advised once known.
It has been said many times but many of the best nights at Rotary are when one of our members presents to the club. Jacqui's talk on Tourette’s Syndrome and the effect it had on her family was straight from the heart. It was a moving and informative talk about the condition and its many different expressions. The emotional roller coaster ride that Jacqui, her son Andrew, and all the family have experienced had us all spellbound. The lack of understanding (even amongst doctors and teachers) only adds to the burden of those suffering Tourette’s, and to their families. At the end of her talk Jacqui answered a number of questions from the floor. We all learnt a great deal about Tourette’s and how hard it is for those effected to try and live a normal life. It is a testament to Jacqui and her family just how well Andrew has done.
Funds raised at the Eltham Farmers Market – to date $3,000 with matching funding from LFC taking it to $6,000. With Board approval we will be transferring $5000 to RC Kinglake Ranges towards their Hay & Stockfeed project for our farmers, doing it tough in bushfire effected areas to our north. My thanks to all who have helped shake tins to raise these much needed funds, but especially to Frank Lynch who, along with past Rotarian and club President Chris Chapple, brought this idea to fruition. Well done Frank.
Last Thursday Rotarian Ron Manison spoke to me that after much deliberation that he would be resigning from Rotary due to ongoing work and family commitments. Ron has been a hardworking  and greatly valued club member and has been a great support to me, acting as my Club Sergeant. His wit and humour will be missed by all of us. On behalf of the club I wish Ron and Wendy all the best for the future.

President John

As your invitation from Irene indicates - this Thursday at our club meeting (6 February) we have a speaker (Natalie Bucknell) who will be presenting on Clean Energy in Nillumbik.  This is a local group that has formed to lead the charge in improving efficiency and adopting renewables in Nillumbik and aims to achieve 100% clean energy by 2028.
Also for your interest and to find out more there will be an electric car on display.  Go and have a look before the meeting and find out more about how it runs, efficiency and any other questions you have on electric cars.

Come along and see the hidden talents of our members and their partners.

It was decided that instead of the usual meeting on 20 February we would encourage members to book in to the Rotary Club of Heidelberg fundraiser on Tuesday 25 February (see the information below) as our meeting for that week.
Then following this event we have the dinner at Machan Restaurant on 27 February.

Welcome to Alan Field OAM
Dear Members,
Last Thursday evening we had the pleasure of reinducting Alan Field into the Rotary Club of Eltham. Older members will recollect Alan had been in the Club for many years, but due to unfortunate circumstances and the fact he lives in Queensland for part of the year, he resigned.
Due to a misunderstanding and the meeting schedule (I take full responsibility) we didn’t explain his achievements or give him the opportunity to speak. Our newer members would be unaware of his extensive background and his dedicated contribution to Community work. Alan has received many awards; they are too numerous to list here.
This is a brief overview and certainly not a complete list.
Alan has been chairman of many organisations including: Nillumbik Council of Disability and Audit Committees, Judge Book Memorial Village Auxiliary, Melbourne City Mission, Eltham Business Development Committee, Chairman and Secretary Eltham Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Protocol Officer Vietnam Veterans Federation.
Alan’s many awards include. O.A.M., Paul Harris Fellow, Citizen and Volunteer of the year Nillumbik Australia day awards, Honorary life membership of Montmorency/Eltham R.S.L. and National Returned Services League R.S.L award. And Honorary Life Member Toastmasters International.
We welcome Alan back, he will be a great member and asset to our Club.
Kind regards,
Frank Lynch P.E.
While I thank you for inviting me back into the Club, I have never really felt that I had left. I originally became a member two years after the Club had presented me with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. I didn’t know what Rotary was. Later I found I wanted to be a part of the Club not just for the great people in it, but also because of the very real outcomes that were produced for the wider community. Because of my other community work I was not able to meet attendance requirements that were required then. That has thankfully changed. I spend half of each year in Queensland in the winter since my illness of which I explained when I looked to return. So I am not sure of my value, but at the end of the day I wanted to leave this world as a Rotarian and I will help your causes as much as I can. The only sadness I had was that my dear mate Bernie Lamers was adamant that he be there for my induction. Even when he was in intensive care he was asking his wife Gerry, if the Club could delay it until he got well. Bernie has now left us, and a massive hole in this world is the result. He will always be imprinted in our hearts and minds and I thank the Lord that he sent him my way. Thanks for having me back, and thanks for all that you do. You are all welcome at our place below, as our kettle is always on.

Rotary Eltham Community Directory Update
Community Grant from Council!
In mid-December a Quick Response Grant of $2000 from the Nillumbik Community Fund was approved by Council to the Rotary Club of Eltham for the initial printing of 560 hardcopies of the directory. Printing was completed last week.
Distribution of hardcopies
These limited hardcopies are now being distributed to libraries and Living and Learning networks throughout the Shire as well as some copies to Real Estate agents (commonly the first point of call for new residents coming to Nillumbik) and other outlets. Real estate agents see this as valuable information for new residents and will distribute hard copies or the electronic link in their ‘welcome packs’ to clients. Vicki Ward MP, Member for Eltham has also undertaken to distribute the electronic directory as well as printed copies for constituents on request.
Electronic Copy online
In parallel, an electronic copy of the directory with live links to the website or Facebook page of each organisation is accessible on homepage with a direct link to the directory at
The latest copy of the directory will always be located at this address.
This is also being promoted widely on social media. You can assist by sharing postings with this link directly to your friends and any networks you belong to. The wider the distribution, the more valuable the directory will be for our community. Remember this year’s R.I. theme: “Rotary Connects the World”.
Feedback and edits
Feedback to date on the value of the directory has been very positive and it clearly fills an unmet community need. It is recognised that there will be some eligible organisations which have not been captured on the list and users are encouraged to notify such details via for inclusion in regular updates of the directory. (The next update will be 15 February, so please advise any edits asap).
Community Directory being developed by Nillumbik Council
The Rotary Community Directory provides significant input to a more detailed searchable online community directory being developed on the Nillumbik Council website this year.

Jokes of the Week
I said to the Gym instructor "Can you teach me to do the splits?'' He said, ''How flexible are you?'' I said, ''I can't make Tuesdays''.
Police arrested two kids yesterday. One was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one - and let the other one off.
Two aerials meet on a roof - fall in love - get married.  The ceremony was rubbish - but the reception was brilliant.
I'm on a whiskey diet. I've lost three days already.
I went to the doctors the other day and I said, 'Have you got anything for wind?' So he gave me a kite.
