I was impressed by Kel Glare’s ability to not take himself too seriously and to reflect on the humour in his handling of some lighter situations in his outstanding and successful policing career. If that humility and perspective kept him sane as Chief Police Commissioner, then there’s a lesson for us all….well me anyway! It was a very interesting and thought-provoking night; a great start to our club night program.
 
Our Board meeting last Wednesday highlighted many activities and issues which had attention through the summer ‘break’ – including applications for Education Grants from District, application for a State Government Volunteers Grant, the stage refurbishment in Alistair Knox Park, collation of financial outturns, facilitating attendees at youth development programs, planning for the Foundation Dance Party, funding issues for Ellimatta Youth programs, Solomon Island project feedback, banners for website and Facebook  etc. The club has a very committed and hard-working Board!
 
Having just passed the half way mark of the Rotary year, it is timely for a forum where Board and members can openly discuss issues facing the club, review progress on our programs and budget to date, and share the ideas for the balance of the year and into the future. Such is this week’s Club Assembly. I look forward to your feedback and ideas.

The band we have booked performed at the 2016 District Conference Dinner Dance and was a great success.

This Week at Rotary

Club Assembly - A forum to review where we're at with our programs and to discuss other issues raised by members for inclusion on the agenda. It's a night for paid up members. No visitors this week.

Time management is of the essence on the night. Prior notice enables relevant Board members to prepare informed responses and for other members to consider their thoughts  ahead of the night. The target is to finish at 8.30pm.

But don't despair, if discussion on an issue runs out of time at the Club Assembly, it will subsequently be followed-up with the relevant Director/committee in following weeks. 

Max Lee will put us in the right mindset for the evening with one of his inimitable Fines sessions.

Reports from the floor:
  1. Kevin Hadingham: Thanks to the Williams and the Hardimans for their hospitality in hosting our January events which supported WEHI and Rotary Foundation. Thanks also to those who responded at short notice for the Australia Day BBQ. Please support the RC Kinglake Ranges dinner on Tuesday 14 February in aid of the Ellimatta Youth Space program. Welcome back to Denese Billings.
  2. Jill Ramsay: Lou has almost completed the Festival accounts and we have an impressive positive financial result. Request from Eltham Chamber of Commerce for volunteers to man pedestrian crossings at Jazz Festival 25/26 February. Please respond on sheet circulating re availability if you have not already done so. So far we have 17 x members willing to help.
  3. Alan McCleary: Thanks to all who helped out at the Eltham North Primary School and Australia Day BBQs. Please leave a note if gas or other supplies are needed – also remember to sign the trailer in and out.
  4. Mike Englefield: Club Assembly next week and Peter Toomey Police Award nominee to be confirmed. Feb 23 Australian Rotary Health/Ride to Conference update. 2 March NO MEETING due to Foundation dance on 3 March).16 March an informal meeting for those not attending conference.
  5. Brett Linsell: Rotaract back on Monday 6 Feb at Eltham Hotel – all welcome. Copies of finemaster/duty teams on table.
  6. Irene Cant: Please use trybooking for the Rotary Foundation Dance Party on 3 March from 7pm – 11pm.
  7. Dale Atkins: Donation of 4 x Aquaboxes from Townsville area of Rotary which is very pleasing.
  8. Gary Williams: Thanks to Kilkullens for such a fun night raising funds for WEHI. Items left behind are here to collect.
  9. Ann Lynch: Flyer to be sent out re Foundation dance on Friday 3 March. Please support RC Nunawading movie night next week (‘Hidden Figures’), to raise funds for the Polio Eradication program – use trybookings. Please ensure weekly attendance responses are in by lunchtime on Weds – also include dietary requirements.
  10. Trevor Smith: Conference is 16-19 March at Riverlinks Eastbank Centre in Shepparton. Registration online via link on District 9790’s website. Accommodation at Southgate Motor Inn – let Trevor know requirements.
  11. Jules Aussems: RACV have donated a $500 voucher to RC Eltham in recognition of 10 years of New Year’s Eve celebrations there. Goal is for 50 x attendees next time and not too soon to be thinking about this!
Speaker: Kel Glare, AO APM O StJ. is a former Victorian Police Chief Commissioner (1987 to 1992) and has self-published his memoir, The Angry Ant (available via bookPOD). Kel kept us well entertained with stories of his career and, now well into retirement, remains a staunch community advocate for ensuring that police work focuses on the primary areas of prevention, enforcement and rehabilitation.
 
 
Invitation to Special Rotary Dinner & Ellimatta Youth Centre Presentation

All Eltham Rotarians have been invited to a special Combined Rotary Dinner at Ellimatta Youth Space in Kinglake on Tuesday 14th February.... a great opportunity to understand the role of Ellimatta in the community recovery. The meeting will hear from the President of the Ellimatta Youth Centre, tour the facilities and witness the special announcement of further Rotary and Government Assistance.
As a sponsor of the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges we have a vested interest in the success of RCKR and the Ellimatta youth programs. They are both key elements in the long term post disaster recovery/rebuilding of the Kinglake community. 
Strong attendance from Eltham will demonstrate our deep support for our sponsored club and recognition of the role of Ellimatta in the long term community recovery process.

Breaking News - Funding for Ellimatta Youth Centre programs

The District 9790 Board meeting at Euroa on Sunday approved in full the Rotary contribution to the Ellimatta Youth Centre programs at Kinglake. Together with grants from Government and philanthropic sources, this will ensure the delivery of three years of development and recreational programs for the youth of Kinglake District. This is an essential component in the long term recovery of the community following the Black Saturday fires.

Lawrence Staub is a Rotarian with Sunbury Rotary Club and has been involved in projects with the Solomon Island for many years. The International Committee has been looking into how we may assist  Lawrence and his work in the Solomon’s. This may involve contributing money and/or labour to help with the water projects, the Tinea prevention program or the Copra project. Lawrence is coming to the club to give us an overview of these projects and how the Rotary Club of Eltham can assist. He will give a presentation to the club on Thursday the 6th of April 2017.
 
Bollywood Time is fast approaching. Once again the International Committee is supporting Kevin (the Pres) of India in another Bollywood spectacular to raise funds to complete the school in Bhopal, India.  The date is the 6th May 2017.  Put it in your diaries now.
 
Wheelchairs for Kids is happening again.  After much discussion the committee decided to run a similar event to last year but in a warmer part of the year. We decided on the first two weeks in September 2017 with Ian to liaise with Russell from WC for kids to lock in a firm date.  Frank will look at involving more stakeholder’s in sponsoring the wheelathon? Bunnings and other Eltham  Businesses. Also looking at getting more youth groups to participate such as Scouts and Guides.

Rotary Leadership Institute 19th February 2017

The RLI course is a 3-part interactive training program which equips Rotarians having interest in future leadership roles with education on Rotary knowledge and leadership skills, so important in our voluntary organisation. The first session is on Sunday 19th Feb,  9am to 1.30pm at Euroa Secondary College. Please speak with Kevin if you would like to be sponsored for this course.
